While it is true that the name “Textus Receptus” was coined some twenty-two years after the 1611 King James Bible was translated, it has become interchangeable (synonymous) with the entire history of Desiderius Erasmus’ debased, corrupt, Greek New Testament. In the preface to the 1633 edition they coined a phrase in Latin “textum ergo babes, nunc ab omnibus receptum…” ei “According to the text now held from the volume received …” Hence, we end up with the title “Textus Receptus” or “Received Text” was born. They reflected closely the work of Beza, who in turn had followed Erasmus. The Elzevir brothers published three editions of the Greek New Testament: 1624, 16. It is Beza’s edition of 1598 and Stephanus edition of 15 that were used as the principal sources by the King James translators. “Octavo” means a size of book page that results from folding each printed sheet into eight creating sixteen pages. He also published five octavo editions: 1565, 1567, 1580, 15. These were printed in folio, which means a sheet of paper folded once to form four pages of a book. Theodore Beza published several editions: 1565, 1582, 1588, and 1598. ![]() Robert Stephanus published four editions: 1546, 1549, 1550, and 1551. His third, fourth, and fifth followed in 1522, 15.
